Brake help!

Post by TNM »

Hello!

Im restoring a minor 1000.
It has the 8inch brakes.
Ive bought the correct shoes from esm and wheel cylinders.
masks and adjustersfrom gs jonesand springs.

When it is fittedtogether and the adjusters, adjusted right down,i cant fit the drum back on.

I have measured the drum, 8 inch.

Just cantwork it out!

Any ideas? Im all out of them now! Help!!

This has come up a couple of times recently - search for the threads. But first - make sure the new shoes are centered correctly when fitting the drums - and I assume the adjusters are wound right down. Compare the shoes with the old ones you took off - are they EXACTLY the same ? I think some have had to file a clearance on the edge of the shoes to stop them catching on the adjusters

As it was a rolling shell, had it been sat on the drums and they have become oval or distorted in some way?
Do you have the shoes round the right way? Is it both sides on the front? Are the rears okay? Perhaps the wrong wheel cylinders?

Don't know if this helps but Just measured mine for you, 8" ,with the shoes on the gap between the ends of the shoes ie at the cylinders is 2" and the outer edge of the shoes from where they sit on the cylinders is 10 1/2 " Just happened to have the drums off for a look.Measured with the shoes still on so may not be exact.

Thanks for the replys people.

Was thinking about it all night, got up at 5 and to the worksop by 5.30 this morning.

Feel a bit stupid, I had the shoes the wrong way around. :(
