The more open design of the early alloy wheels (eg Minilite etc) was also designed to provide better brake cooling - partly due to conduction but mostly due to improved airflow over the hot brake parts.

hence why modern cars and modern alloys are so much better off with alloys, as the discs are mounted on the wheel side of the hub as opposed to the upright side.
