Rattle behind Speedo
My 1969 Morris Traveller has suddenly developed a rather annoying rattle that appears to be coming from behind the Speedo. It comes and goes according to engine revs (vibration) when moving but is not influenced by road speed. I have ensured the Speedo is properly located and tightened the securing screws but this has made no difference. Any suggestions please as to a likely cause to help plan the process of elimination. Thanks.
Re: Rattle behind Speedo
This has been my hobby on mine for the last two years. Fixed a lot of possible causes, but the rattle is still there. The problem is it's not always there.
Good luck on your hunt. Sometimes it seems you fix one rattle only to be able to hear another that the first was masking. I guess it is why we own these cars of character.

Re: Rattle behind Speedo
don,t mean to put a dampener on things but this sort of thing happened to me last year,on and off for some weeks till it all came to a head one day..... my speedo packed in ,the noise was the build up to it failing, just a thought

Re: Rattle behind Speedo
Or maybe it's engine 'pinking' noise coming through the bulkhead gaps....... Retard the ignition for a trial run to see if it's disappeared.....

could it be the wires tapping against the bulkhead? have you disturbed anything recently? you will probably get used to it in the end.

When the rattle is really bad try pulling gently on the choke - I had a similar problem and it was the inner choke cable rattling in the sleeve - made a hell of a noise! Fixed it by securing the cable against the battery tray with cable ties

Have you checked to see if you have got rubber grommets fitted where the speedo cable and choke cable pass through the bulkhead?
