choke lever is not staying put

Hi there, I recently fitted a new choke cable and pinch bolt. What stops it from dropping down to the off position because it used to stay where you pull it out but now just retracts to the off position.

Please advise.

They are supposed to be a twist to lock type but many don't. A new one I purchased recently didn't lock either so I sent it back. I'm now using a peg to hold the knob out....

My one has a channel under the lever, not sure if it twists? Funny thing is. It used to hold itself. There was a one piece of wire opposed to braided.

Funny though, I removed a kink from the sheathing maybe that held the lever in place? I assumed it would only wear the cord out!

The one piece wire had a kink to give some friction, so it stayed where you put it, also enabled the cable to be pushed back in rather than braided wire that has to be returned by the little coiled spring on the carb.

As said, the choke cable should be twisted as it is fitted in the clamp. Otherwise use a wooden clothes peg which is clipped to the rear view mirror stem when not in use

Still don't know why to bend the wire at the pin. I removed a kink in the coiled braid that was in the place where the cable begins to curve, it would create friction here! Will put it back in but will probably account for cables breaking prematurely.

If you use the clothes peg you wouldn't have much choice on where to put the choke, only halfway out?

It's friction that keeps the wire one where you put it.

It's an original that had single wire with new braided and greased cord soldered on!

Yes I have heard that grease lubricates I'm not sure about what you are calling the cord, (maybe the inner cable?) and indeed what you have soldered to it. It is usually simply pushed through the outer sheath and secured the other end with a nipple.

Mine clicks as you pull it out and then you have to twist it a bit to unlock it to let it return. I think the locking bit is in the housing behind the choke button (you're not supposed to say "knob" in the MMOC messageboard) in the dash.

just an update, due to keeping the same choke lever and replacing with braided cable the cable wouldn't stay put.

i am doing well with the clothes peg method.

Braided cable isn't torsionally stiff enough for the mechanism to work properly, if you don't mind having a clothes peg knocking around it's fine.
