William Morris's house - Nuffield place

Post by davidpidge »

I was reading an artical in the national trust magazine about William Morris - Lord Nuffield which focused on his former home, Nuffield place in Oxfordshire. They need to raise £600.000 to open it to the public or its at risk of being put on the open market. If anyone has read anything about the life and history of William Morris its easy to see how we ended up with the Minor. He was an incredibly practical man. In his bedroom, theres a tangle of wires where a lamp is rigged up above his bed for reading, the bed itself is up against the blocked fireplace as a headboard. He had a small workshop in his wardrobe with some tools and his apendix kept in formalin. He gave loads of money to hospitals, the local community and worldwide projects. He gave away some £11 billion in todays money. Theres an iron lung in one of the upstairs rooms which was one of 5000 made at his factory which he gave away to hospitals. It's even got car handles on its sides!
