What i did today...

after reading the vizard bible and learning how inefficent a 90 degree entry into the carb is, i decided to make a nice little stub stack for my HS4, and knocked up this design using the CAD software at uni...

then I've spent the last two saturdays beavering away with a lathe, a milling machine, and a lump of alluminium...

it may not make any difference, but i enjoyed it as an exercise. tempted to try and learn how to use to bench flow tester at uni and see what effect it has.

Looks good - although a better /tighter 'seamless' fit to the carb would be better. Same effect can be done in about half an hour with a half-round hand file and some emery paper - directly on the mouth of the carb.....

i've got a tighter fit now, it's been bolted up tighter since i took the pic!

i didn't fancy filling my carb with swarf. if i'd thought about it before, i had the carb in bits when i re-bushed the spindle, i could've held it (with the filter baseplate bolted on) on the miller and machined it there. maybe i'll do that next time

Hey Chris,

What CAD did you use to knock up that design-looks nicely rendered and shiny!
I use Autodesk Inventor at work and college, which is OK, but i'm trying to lean more towards Autocad or Solidworks.
I keep meaning to get a copy of that Vizard book for my new 1330 project too..... Seems expensive at 20 quid

The book is well worth having...often cheap on ebay.

Just lurk around on ebay, I got my copy for a fiver as the seller spelt vizard with 2 Z's so no one found it in a search, got another copy for a mate for 8 quid, had finger prints on some of it but still perfectly readable.

my copy was £13 brand new on amazon, and free postage

did the cad on Catia V5R20. It's a lot like solid works, nice and intuitive!

Those designs look awesome Chris. Where are you studying? Must be a good uni/college.

The only engineering course I could get on was a day release at Colchester in Essex, about 30 miles from where I live, in Ipswich.
We have nice machines but the CAD/CNC side is pretty crud. If i could do designs like yours then my life would be complete ;)

Im now looking into downloading Catia to test it. Looks fab and I didnt realise it was the same company as Solidworks.

The internet appears to have put people off:

1) Reading books
2) Taking the time to do the job properly when there's the option of a cheaper/ untested bodge.

From the look of that small pic of your engine bay you're lavishing quite a lot of time/ love on your car. Take a gold star.

I am kind of obsessed with reading all the books I have managed to get my hands on so far (to do with the car). I'm determined to know as much as I can (and hopeully spend as little money as possible in taking her to the garage!).

same with when i got mine. i was only 16 and i just absorbed as much as i could (it was 1995, so as there was pretty much no internet, i had an advantage ) and it stood me in good stead.

saved a fortune, which i then spent on things like 5 speed gearbox bellhousings and the like

my next job is the five speed conversion. planning on doing it in my easter break.

the boring bit is though, it all bolts on! i don't have to design or make anything!

i'm at Coventry Uni by the way, studying Motorsport Engineering, but i did my first year in Automotive Engineering Design where i learnt the cad stuff!

it is very easy, as everything just bolts on.

i was an utter pedant as to where the mounts went for the new gearbox. i measured everything SEVERAL times before any welding took place

the shortened, balanced propshaft looked very nice when it came back from the machine shop

what welding did you have to do?

did you make your own prop? i was planning on buying one for ease!

did you have to cut the floor much to get the tail of the box to clear? that's my biggest worry!
