SPLIT SCREEN WINDSCREEN PROBLEMS

hi guys i got a split screen and a NEW rubber seal its a bitch and the thing dont sit flat

1 the lip to sit on the frame is about 4cm's short
2 is about 1inch to long
3 the mold is two thick and its impossible to fit it back in the car

as the screens then become tight and is no play there should be a bit but none


IF SOMEONE HAS FITTED THERE NEW FRONT WINDSCREEN RUBBER AND ARE USING YOUR VECHILE (to see if sealed or cracked the glass)
CAN U PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE MESSAGE ON THIS BOARD TO HELP ME AND OTHERS

it makes no difference who you call the rubbers will still not fit the frame get some black seelant any type that sets and bonds and just stick them down ,It's what everybody else has had to do, the rubbers just do not fit the frame or glass.Its about the worst replacement part I have ever seen I tried two before giving up and using windscreen bonding agent.I had bits of tape and lengths of timber from the edge of the rubber onto the garage wall to hold it down whilst it bonded. Even then had to do one corner again after about two years,absolute rubbish. Only hope is that you can find an new orgininal. Wish I had a dozen make a fortune on E bay

i had the same problem these can never of been tried for size before, i had to use fish tank sealant and have thrown them away now as they are rubbish

well all the only way to do this is to get some glass remade 1/8 of a inch smaller all the way round to give leway and it is the only wat the MY FAVOURITE CAR IS A DATSUN CHERRY rubber is too thick and 4-5 mm to short around the frame appatuer yh what ever so if u did to change the rubber it will cost £100-£150 to do and thats a seal and two new glass'es

dont do it ,I tried that on the first one I did,the rubber still dosen't fit to the frame and you still need to bond the corners on also You will find that,the new glass is thinner than the old. you can't get toughened glass cut smaller,so you have to use laminated. Then the glass dosen't fit the rubber so you have to fill up the gaps with bonding agent. Been there and tried it ,it dosen't work use the old toughended glass and stick the rubbers down.If you havent read all the old postings,please do.but Briefly the easiset way is to fit the rubber to the frame,put the one glass into the rubber One side only,use a strap round the frame of the car and that one glass and pull the glass out towards the frame by tightening the strap,leave for a day,then do the otherside,leaving the first strap inplace,leave another day then try to fit the central rubber and strip.If it still too small a gap re tighten the straps and eventually the gap in the centre will be big enough to get the centre strip in. Once in just cut the straps close to the centre and pull them out.Then stick the corners of the rubber down.sikaflex is the best to use. DON'T OVERTIGHTEN the straps on the first go you might break the glass just tighten a little bit at a time and leave for a while then a bit more to slowly pull the glass outwards. Good luck

@kennatt well i knew it had to be sealed down as its 4-5 mm shorter so it dont/wont seal with out a sealent
and ive have tuffenned glass made not this modern laminated glass witch is thicker and softer

This is a job I'm not looking forward to! As a matter of interest, can you get laminated glass which is the same thickness as the original toughened stuff?

unfortunately - no! We did this about 7 years ago to our Daughter's '56 splitty. It took 4 people to fit the screens, 2 inside the car pushing the glass out and 2 outside steadying it. The rubber is made to fit the older thinner glass not laminated glass.

well this is what ive done and its mint and a decent job NOT A BODGY JOB

U NEED
crap rubber for split lol
two new windows remade 1/8 of a inch smaller all the way round maybe to me another 1mm of top and bottom
none setting window sealent (like a putty) i forgot the name but its about £5-6 in a tube u use all
and loads of time

the windows now fit in with out the thought of a speed bump then smash glass everywhere
and i never had the chrome finisher so i put earth wire around the bead and put sealent over it looks good even then thats smaller so the finisher even then wont fit in all the way ((( i think i dont no im still a fast learner on moggys )))

so i hope that helps anyone but this is what is working for me overall £150ish for the lot windows £90-100 sealent and then rubbish rubber

will do im using her all this week then the scooters so i hope it rains again but heavy it rained when i first did it and it did lighty leaky leak in the left but more sealent was added and it hasnt rain since heavy but i will message at tell u when it POURS IT DOWN

I did mine 5 years ago and what a bitch of a job it was!
I arranged for a windscreen replacement chap to do it, he said he had done them before!! I think he had probably fogotten.....It took 4 of us, 2 inside and 2 outside, loads and loads of windscreen sealent and lots of coaxing and swearing! Took about 2 and a half hours and lots of tea!
It only started leaking a bit last year in very heavy rain, so let's hope it lasts!

It was done in 2 pack, when I first had the car 25 years ago.....I had the front done in cellulose, it didn't last well, so I decided as I use the car every day 2 pack was for me! 5 years on and the paint is as good as the day it was done!
