clutch + brake shaft

Post by Peetee »

Operating the clutch creates some movement in the brake pedal and vice-versa. I thought I would lube the clutch/brake pedal shaft. Is this hidden in the chassis leg or do I access it from under the car?
Older and more confused than I could ever imagine possible.

It goes through the chassis leg and has a phosphor-bronze bush at either end where it goes through the leg. The brake pedal also has two of the same bushes in it and rotates around the clutch pedal shaft. It sounds like your bushes/shaft are worn a bit. I doubt lubricating will do any good.

fixing it is a difficult job. and involves welding the clutch pedal to a new shaft

Thanks Cam - well described. It's up with the carpets then.

Yes and probably the gearbox tunnel cover too. I agree with Cam that lubrication isn't likely to help - you will need to inspect the shaft and bearings to find out which bit/s need fixing.
On the last one I did the bearings were fine but the shaft was heavily worn (fixed by welding the original shaft up and grinding it round)
It had got so bad that engine braking was difficult as the clutch would stay open until I took my foot off the brakes.
