clicking on ignition

Post by kangarolf »

Hi all,

As soon as I switch on the ignition there is a series of repeating clicks that start off repeating quickly and then die off to an occassional click. I am presumming that this is the coil...is it indicative of a coil gone 'bad' or someother problem that is going to occur soon...?

Thanks
Rolf

That sounds like the petrol pump and is perfectly normal. It is the float bowl filling (rapid clicks from the pump) and then stopping when it has reached the correct level and the needle valve closes the supply off causing the fuel in the pipe to pressurise and the clicks to slow down and stop.

clicks

The only thing is that the float chamber should not need filling up
'every time you switch on the ignition' so, have you a leak from
the carb float chamber? When you switch off, feel under the
float bowl and see if you can detect petrol. If yes then you need to
check the tightness of the nut where the little tube from the jet
joins the bowl (underneath). If you have a very early car then
you can get more leaks from around the jet fixings.

The main time to worry is when the clicks are really fast and don't stop because that means you've run out of petrol or got a hole in your fuel line. In Minerva I could judge what was left in the tank as when the pump started to speed up I knew I had to find a petrol station in the next 15 mile :)

On Riley that only gave 15 seconds not 15 miles! I soon learnt to refill him before the guage said empty! My first mog would go 40 miles after the guage said empty, but they are all different.

pskipper,
How are you managing without a Moggy?? .... Riley is for sale for roughly what your insurance company paid out ;-)

I decided I should pay off my MOT costs on the credit card from getting Minerva on the road! If you'd mentioned it a week ago you might have caught me ;).
