choke cable fitting

Hi Everyone, I have a 69 Minor 1098cc, I want to fit a new choke unit, I have a new one which will push in gradually rather then using the matchbox wedge trick( I made up a rubber wedge) ,my question is how best do I gain access to the retaining nut keeping the existing choke cable to the dashboad? is it via the glovebox or space behind the steering wheel? I have worked out how to disconect the cable at the carb end-Many thanks in advance

Remove the speedo and/or the glovebox and you should be able to access the nut behind the inst. panel.
The technique for keeping the choke out is to give the end of the cable a twist before tightening the clamp.
The traditional method of keeping the choke out is to use a wooden (for originality) clothes peg which is kept clipped to the interior mirror arm.

The best story I heard about holding the choke cable out was from customer service. A new owner was complaining about how her new Minor would run rough after a few minutes. After numerous return trips with the same complaint, yet nothing wrong could be found, a joint drive was suggested. The owner and the mechanic got into the car, the owner pulled out the choke and hung her handbag on it, started the car and off they went, and in a couple of moments the Morris started running roughly. Certainly one way to hold the choke out, but she wouldn't take it off. Note that this would have been LHD and the handbag might have been hitting the driver's leg depending on how low it hung.

That one about the handbag hanging on the choke almost as old as the motor car industry. Incidentally Daimler made a special "Lady's Model" of their 104 in the fifties which included such things as a special place to stow the umbrella and a gold propelling pencil. Our dear Queen's 1994 Daimler XJ which came up for sale this year had a redesigned armrest to stow her handbag. No hanging it on the choke for her!
