Crakshaft Pulley nut
Anyone know the size of the 1275 engine crankshaft pulley nut, in mm?
To turn the engine for the purpose of adjusting tappets I would like to use a socket & ratchet.
Need to buy a socket of the right size first go as they are, of course, not cheap.
thanks
Chris

Alternatively remove the plugs and turn it over with the fan blades

Re: Crakshaft Pulley nut
You need a deep socket. I have a 33mm socket from an MAN truck-used for the wheel nuts.

Re: Crakshaft Pulley nut
Thanks for all the replies...33mm is the one to get.
The reason I can't use a starting handle is because one of the mods required with it having an auto g/box is that the engine is mounted 2" lower than usual (so that the torque converter housing clears the steering rack) & the hole in the bumper is not aligned with the dog...not that it has a dog fitted anyway.
Not found the plugs out, turn fan blades very successful
Thanks again to all!

Re: Crakshaft Pulley nut
Chris,
If it hasn't got the dog then it might not be the 33mm. If it does fit then you might get away with an ordinary 1/2" drive 33mm socket which is a lot cheaper than a deep socket. I would measure it to be on the safe side. I think the normal starter dog is 1 5/16" which works out at 33.33mm. You might have to go for 34mm depending on tolerances. I have a 34mm thin walled socket made by "Proxxon" which I bought at the local DIY which fits the steering wheel nut (same size) beautifully where the 33 was too tight. Or just get a 1 5/16" socket.

Just a thought

Re: Crakshaft Pulley nut
Chris,
The crank pulley bolt is 1 5/16" AF, and a standard depth socket fits fine. The starting handle dog is also 1 5/16" AF, but you will need a deep socket for it. I bought a 3/4" drive deep socket and a 3/4" to 1/2" adapter. This was at Beaulieu last year - I have been looking for ages for one. Also found a 1 7/8" AF socket for the rear hub nuts on another stand!! There seem to be more 3/4" deep big sockets around than 1/2"??

That's the norm over 1 1/8" AF. Let's face it, bigger bolts need more torque hence bigger square drive. Over 2" AF the norm is 1" square driveThere seem to be more 3/4" deep big socketes around than 1/2"??

Re: Crakshaft Pulley nut
Thanks, Declan & Islip
I think that probably the 1& 5/16 from the Ebay site will be the one I will get. Hate to buy a 33mm from Halfords only to find it is a fraction too small.
