Dodgy indicator

Post by yellowpinky »

Recently I have found that my indicators are behaving strangely. Firstly it was flashing irregularly, that kind of develped to flashing for a bit and then stopping. I noticed that if I rev up when it stops flashing it starts again - but not always. The ignition light doesn't go all the way out after starting up either. A friend suggested I need to replace the diode in the alternator??? I have had trouble getting the fan belt really tight. It's not slipping, but it does make a tiny squeek when I turn the engine off.

Certainly sounds like low volts - get the belt tight - the IGN light must go off. Best to check the battery volts when engine running at good revs - and report back.

Fan belt first check, then check the battery is charging and second check the battery itself (both multimeter jobs)

I was pleased to finally get the fanbelt tight. But the problem persists. I noticed that the problem seems to be associated with the indicator stalk/switch inside the cab. The indicators outside the vehicle work fine but the stalk often dies after a couple of flashes. The ignition light is always about 15% on. I have a hazard switch which works fine and yes I have am using an alternator. I have a battery condition meter inside the cab that reads 14-15 volts. I think the meter over reads but is behaving normally. Am struggling with lack of time, but will look into using a mutimeter over the weekend.

Well - 14 to 15 volts is fine. It's just a dodgy flasher unit - try another!

Hello YP,

I don't understand that, with what you say, the ignition light is 15% on? There's something wrong there?

Hi Alec,

What I meant about the ignition light is that it was only partly on. ie. very dimly. I think that tightening the fan belt fixed that as it goes out completely now. And the indicator problem was a seperate issue fixed by replacing the flasher unit.[frame]Image[/frame]
