Over-riders

When the nut rusts solid to the bolt and the two of them spin around out of sight, how do you get the over-rider off?
Older and more confused than I could ever imagine possible.

With great difficulty!

Sorry, seriously now, take the bumper off and grind the nut off. You'll just have to replace the bolt and nut (use stainless behind the overiders, it can't be seen easily from there anyway if your trying to keep your mog looking standard).

Chisel? Dremel? Blowtorch? Catering-size tin of WD40? Or my personal favourite: get someone else to do it... :lol: :D

In short, perseverence and lots of plasters would be the order of the day!! I was thinking of replacing Phyllis' front overriders, but the nuts look to be a bit ferrous, so I've put it on the back-burner. :D

Gareth is that the correct size for soaking Phyllis in if so you wont need any plasters :wink:

WD40 is not designed to free rusted bolts! A 'releasing fluid' is
much more effficient. When assembling bumpers/irons/and
overriders dip every bolt in Waxoyl and paint everything with
the same stuff when it is all assembled. It will unscrew without
difficulty ten years later(that was my experience anyway).

Ever thought of using coke? No not the white powder, the good old brown stuff in a bottle... I didn't delieve it until a mate of mine tried it on seized exhaust clamp bolts.
He'd been soaking them with oil for 2 days with no joy & then someone told him to tie a rag around it & drench it with coke - about 4 hours later the nuts came off as easy as anything.....
Coke is seriously corrosive stuff, drop a nail in some in a glass - it'll be gone in six weeks.....

It is well known that Coke contains an acid! Try spilling some on
a carpet and see what damage it can do. My relative has just
received a handsome settlement to pay for damage caused by
Coca Cola leaking from faulty tins.

yeah phosphoric acid.... which is used as a rust eater... makes you wonder what you are doing by drinking it!!

I had all 4 over riders off my Moggy a couple of weeks ago.

I found they came off fairly easily if you use a slim ring spanner on the end of the bolt then, while taking care to hold that in place with one hand, get another spanner on the nut with the other hand and turn that.

I haven't found any other way that works anyway!

I have just been given a new front bumper but need the chrome bolts. Where can I get these from?

Bull Motif, East Sussex minors both feep them in stock, just ask for the best they have as the cheap ones dont last a year.

Willie's tip of reassembly is good, I pinched that one ofyou a couple of years ago, seems to work a treat. As for removal, a dremel is the best tool I have found, cut the bolt off.

Also second the vote for plus gas, used that on many occasion too.

Bull Motif list them in their catalogue, 69p + VAT + p&p for chrome bolt & nut.

Most places should be able to sell them to you :)

Try BullMotif. They've been pretty good with small parts with me in the past...
