does anyone know what the measurement is that the valve guide protrudes in to the top of the cylinder head on a 1098 engine

The trick is to replace only 1 guide at a time - using a straight edge across the other guides as a setting point. The Manual advises in section AA 43 (page AA 29) the guides should be 19/32" above the machined surface of the valve spring seating. Of course - you MUST use a good-fitting stepped drift to fit the new guides and it may help to have the head warmed in the oven and the guides straight from the freezer.
