garage problems

so, primrose has some shiny new spring hangers and now is waiting for her mot on friday. i went to have a check of bits for her mot and discovered that whilst the chap was welding, he has really really badly knackered the paint work on the drivers side, (the between the door opening and the rear wing, that little flat bit) to the point, their is lots of bare metal showing, most of the filler has gone and the paint work is beyond repair. Thankfully i haven't paid, and its one of those cash in hand jobbies, but my dilemma is this-

considering this garage is used by the whole family and dad uses it to fix his car when it brakes (chauffeur business, so its broken every other day) so i try and haggle down the price a bit, owing to this damage? and if so, how ? (the british disease of being unable to haggle is quite strong with me)

I would take the car and your dad back to the garage and ask for him to comment on it..

the fact that your dad takes a lot of business to the guy will mean he will not want to tell you just to pay up, or your dad may take the business else where

It's inevitable that heat will be generated when welding - especially if he was using oxy/acetylene. Just one of the hazards - nothing much you can do about it. Just set to and repair the damage. By all means point it out to them but no point making a big fuss.

presuming it is a saloon and not a trav, you can't do the job without damaging the paint.
Paint damage can be limited using a cold wet rag on the area, to limit how much high heat travels through the panel, but there will always be some paint damage. considering the area had filler in it, it probably means that the job was harder as there was corrosion damage in the surrounding areas...
