Post by suffolkhare »

How do I fix a wobbly ignition swith? I have to wind it up before it starts! Nothing wrong mechanically, just very annoying.

A " wobbly " igntion switch ?
Do you mean that the central barrel rotates in the dashboard hole, as you try to fire up the engine ?

If so, the bezel retaining ring needs to be tightened up to keep the keyhole in the right position.
A correct spanner is available but most people cheat, for what is usually a one off occaison.

Insert two large flat bladed screwdrivers ( the largest you can get to fit, otherwise they are likely to slip)
in the cut outs of the bezel.Cross the two shafts of the screwdrivers, so that you can exert clockwise pressure
to tighten the bezel ring.
If you are not confident about the screwdrivers not slipping and scratching the paintwork put gaffa tape/ masking tape
around the ignition switch.
Using your third hand ( O.K. get a mate to help !!) reach up under the dash to hold the barrel from rotating whilst the bezel
is tightened.Make sure no wires are dislodged in the process.

Dis-connect the battery FIRST, if you are the least bit "ham fisted " or aren't blessed with small, multi jointed hands.Mine bear a close resemblance to a bunch of bananas.
Check the fix has worked and then remove the tape, if the switch is in the right position.

Thanks Bob - I shall do my best. I have very delicate female hands, by the way!
