HIF 38 carb

Post by win »

Hi All
I bought a HIF 38 carb, with a water heated manifold, I noticed the piston was very free to move, the seller assured me it had been removed from a 1100 car in good working order, as I had never used a 38, I assumed it was different to HS2.

After fitting it ran just awful, no adjustment would prevent it running very weak.
After removal of piston damper, found there was not a spring in it, hope nobody was watching how long I had been trying to set this up.

My problem now is I am unable to identify the carb model.
It does look like a HIF38, with crescent shaped throttle, ball bearing piston damper, 1.1/2" engine side bore, L shaped bottom of main jet, damper top LZX 1773, choke JZX 1609, PD cast into body, ADP needle, no tag or damper spring.

I Am intending to run it on a 1098 standard. Can anyone identify it, or tell me which spring and needle I require?

Also which engine breathing is best for this carb, breather on side of valve chest into carb, and which oil filler cap/ breather.
If you need any pics, see posting hif38 carb questions, 20 Sep 2010.
Many thanks Win

It will certainly need a spring! It may be fine on the track without the spring = good throttle response etc, but likely to 'gasp' horribly. The ADP needle may not be ideal - but try with spring first. Are you sure it's an HIF carb - and not an HS4 ? Point us to the earlier post - I don't see it.

It is indeed a n HIF then - and yes - it NEEDS that spring! And probably a needle change too.

Hi All
Looks like the carb is a FZX 1414 from a Metro 1,000

Doesn't really matter what it came from. Just take the rocker cover breather pipe directly to the side entry on the carb. Try the carb with any spring you have - and the ADP needle. It may give best economy.
