SPEEDOMETER PROBLEMS
Hi, My speedometer just stopped working yesterday. all of a sudden it just dropped to 0 and hasn't moved since. I have had to change the cable on our mg before but the cable on Marigold looks in good nick at both ends. Do I just undo the two screws on the metal plates either side of the dial to release the dial to somehow check if that is the problem? what else could it be? Any advice?
Re: SPEEDOMETER PROBLEMS
It is likely to be the cable - pull it out to inspect. You can test the speedo using an electric drill gun - running backwards.

Re: SPEEDOMETER PROBLEMS
Worst case scenario - the nylon teeth have stripped off the speedo drive. Possible but unlikely

Re: SPEEDOMETER PROBLEMS
You didn't say if the odometer is advancing. A speedometer is really two instruments in one. If the speedo needle has been swinging back and forth lately that says something is binding and causing the cable to "wind up". Eventually something will give, the gear in the speedo head, the cable or the drive in the gearbox. Murphy's law will apply

Another option is where the cable joins the drive at the gearbox end. Mine had opened out and started slipping due to wear on both the cable and the drive. It happened the same way as yours, no warning, and just stopped one day.
