kenlowe fan

Hello everyone,
I've bought myself a kenlowe electric fan. Its the type that fixes through the radiator core with cable ties. Does anyone have any tips about fixing one? What about in front or behind the radiator? Any advantages either way?

You'll have to check which type of fan you've bought, Colin. Kenlowe make pusher fans (for between grille and rad, pushing the air in) and sucker fans (for behind the rad to suck the air in).

With the original fanblades removed, a sucker should fit the Morris easily, but it would be best to have a trial run, and make sure the engine mountings won't cause too much flexing which could result in the fan becoming damaged.

Fitting a pusher/blower would be more complex, as the upright grille slats may require modification for the fan to fit correctly.

What prompted the purchase, if you don't mind sharing?

Hello again,
Just seemed logical to go with a thermostatically controlled fan. The engine heats up in start/stop traffic but the engine revs are low and so the fan doesnt really deliver and then vice versa when travelling on a motorway, there's plenty of air going through yet the standard fan is working hard. This kenlowe seems to run in either direction by swapping the wires round so pushing or pulling doesnt seem to be a problem. Mounting between grill and rad seems tidier but then access to it is restricted if I get problems. Just fancied seeing what other people had done.

Colin,
just swapping the wires round to make the fan run the other way isn't a good idea. The fan will be, as Gareth says, either a blower or a sucker and the fan blades will be shaped accordingly to give the best performance for the type of fan. If you have bought the fan new the instructions should tell you what type of fan it is and whether it goes between grille and radiator or engine and radiator.

I have a kenlowe on my Morris and it's very good. Mines a blower going between grille and rad.

Hello Wal,
This one's secondhand but comes with the instructions which say its a 'sucker'. I was hoping to put it between the grill and rad as a 'pusher' but it looks as though that not going to work if the blades arent right.

It's not just the blades that make the difference either. Often the position of the brushes on the motor wil be slightly offset to make them perform better in one direction on a motor that's only designed to run one way. It will work the other way, but the brush wear will be quicker.

No Gareth they make both types.
The recommended one for `A` series engines in Minors is from their 200 series type 9S 10" which is of the sucker type for limited space applications, their blower fan does not fit between the grill and rad.

Thanks for stating which ones fit, though - I'd wondered which would be best but never got around to emailing to find out!!
