It's a bit like our old cat

Post by kenshiro »

I've just bought a traveller, nice enough and as (almost) always it's going to be a 'work in progress'. Since getting it - through the wonder of e bay (!) - I've had a reasonably thorough look over and into it...

It's a bit like our old cat, in as much that the bones (floor, chassis, etc) are good/been repaired/replaced, some of the bits that have been fitted by Morris 'specialists' have been done to an appalling standard.

The spark plugs were fitted straight from the box with massive gaps, points are badly fitted and gapped, timing was out, carb/mixture too rich to compensate for lack of power and rocker gaps 7 out of 8 too big by up to 8 thou!

The people I bought from seemed reasonably decent, mechanically they probably didn't have much acumen, I don't know BUT the thing is that they have been ripped off by (I was told) a well known and reputable company.

I've put the bodges to rights and the car pulls well now, the brakes are 90% better too now that I've adjusted the brakes.

Oh, I forgot to mention the servo which is fitted but inoperative, that's getting the strip down treatment as soon as it stops raining..

Yes, it's just like our old cat, I knew it wasn't worth what I'd agreed to pay for it - and did - but it will give me a lot to take my mind off things, something to work on, be worth a lot more to me than I paid for it because of the troubles we face and defeat, the fun that ownership will bring and the comments that will come over the years.

Our old fluffy ginger and white cat, that we got from a pet shop, who didn't have fleas.. they had him! Who was trained to sit and pick up pegs on command and attack my missus' feet when she wasn't looking, he has been re incarnated.

Not as a ginger and white tom cat, he's a blue Moggy!

Sorry to hear your lovely new Moggie has not been as well looked after in the past as it should have been by those who are supposed to know what they are doing to our wonderful machines.

As for the reference to your cat! Well we had a very moth eaten looking old tom cat we rescued and boy has he been hard work to tame but once sorted he responds nicely to us now and we wouldn't be without him! So I hope your moggie will soon be sorted so you can enjoy it.

Welcome to the forum - and to Traveller ownership. You say " the thing is that they have been ripped off by (I was told) a well known and reputable company " - would be interested to know which 'reputable' Co that was - by Private Message please - if you can !? If the car has standard drum brakes - you will probably find they work just fine without the servo - it's really not necessary.
