cooling issues

Post by fatal8446 »

hi guys,

right just a quick one, im having major issues with keeping the mog cool. i fitted the 1275 head, a metro gta radiator with an electric pull through fan and a swirl pot/ expansion tank. now if i go on any long drives (ie like 25-30 miles) shes hitting near on 100deg c this is with the fan on perminantly.

any sujestions as to how i can fix this, ive pulled the thermostat already so she is just running open line

You must not run without a stat - unless you fit a thermostat blanking sleeve. I would have thought a Metro rad would cool it enough - same engine after all! Could be water pump problem - or silted up block - or silted up radiator - or cylinder head gasket problem....... You don't say what engine size - and did you use the 1275 head gasket ?

Not sure about which way a Metro fan works but if it is the same as an early Mini fan it would be working the wrong way.
I met a person once who thought that fitting a multi blade mini fan would keep his Minor engine cool, until I pointed out that the fan was designed to push the air back through the rad.
Probably nothing to do with your problem but I thought I would throw it in anyway

right sorry left some details out there, its running the standard 1100 block with a 1275 head, the fan is a stand alone unit that pulls air through the rad, only took the thermos out as was trying to see if that kept her cool (it doesn't) i was thinking of adding a second fan to the system, might try a rad flush on it tomorrow see if that helps. other than that im flumuxed :o

Sounds like a blocked rad. Flushing water through it does not always work as the water takes the easiest route, bypassing the blocked tubes. You may have to get it professionally flushed.

Hello Fatal,

don't worry about the fan, it's the motion of the car that gets air through the radiator. In other words extra fan power is not going to help, it's function is when the car is stationary or in slow moving traffic.

Hi dont just put radflush in the rad take it out first and back flush it a few times to clear the worst of any rubbish that's in the rad, also backflush the engine block as well as its surprising what can come out, and as Roy has mentioned which head gasket did you use ?
Cheers
