Will a 155 x 14 fit the spare wheel bay?

Post by Uncle Cib »

Hello,

I have only just joined the club and am looking forward to receiving my membership document. May I ask one small question? I have just ordered five 155 x 14 radial tyres for my 1956 Series II four door saloon. Will the 155 fit into the spare wheel bay? I measured the distance from the bottom of the boot shelf to the top of the boot securing latch an found that it measures 155mm exactly so it could be a squeeze. I suppose that I would have read something about this on the forum, if it actually were a problem.

Many thanks.

Yes it will and you will still have room to store a spare head gasket set on top, and that is on a 6 1/2 gall tank. On a 5 gall tank there is loads of room

Not having had much in the way of tire problems for the last 30 or 40 years I bought only 4 new 155X14s for our '61 2 door and don't have a spare yet. I plan on going to the self-serve auto wreckers and getting one of the modern mini spare tires. Hopefully I will be able to find one with a rim that will fit our Morris, if not I'll just put the mini tire on the car's spare rim.
The mini spare should give lots of room in the spare tire compartment for additional junk.

It can certainly be a squeeze - I use a 145 as the spare.

I have the Toyo 155's and it fits fine. You have to push it in as it is a squeeze but you won't have a problem. I wonder if people with wider tyres have spare tyres. :P

Just J-j-j-jiggle it a bit.

I doubt very much if you will find a spacesaver wheel with the correct 4 in PCD. 155 x 14 will fit no problem. :) My 175 x 13s on my Traveller will not fit :o

Not sure what the wheels are off but the Series MM hubcaps fit.
I use a 155 x 14 as a spare which has almost the same circumference

Pitch Circle Diameter
The distance between the centres of diagonal wheel studs in the case of four stud wheels or the diameter of a circle passing through the centres of all the studs with five or more studs.

The term PCD stands for (pitch circle diameter ( from t'internet)

Looking at Mike Perrys pictures reminded me of a useful tip;

The dots on the sidewall typically denote unformity and weight. It's impossible to manufacture a tyre which is perfectly balanced and perfectly manufactured in the belts. As a result, all tyres have a point on the tread which is lighter than the rest of the tyre - a thin spot if you like. It's fractional - you'd never notice it unless you used tyre manufacturing equipment to find it, but its there. When the tyre is manufactured, this point is found and a coloured dot is put on the sidewall of the tyre corresponding to the light spot. Typically this is a yellow dot (although some manufacturers use different colours just to confuse us) and is known as the weight mark. Typically the yellow dot should end up aligned to the valve stem on your wheel and tyre combo. This is because you can help minimize the amount of weight needed to balance the tyre and wheel combo by mounting the tire so that its light point is matched up with the wheel's heavy balance point. Every wheel has a valve stem which cannot be moved so that is considered to be the heavy balance point for the wheel.

It mostly applies to new tyres but a lot of tyre fitters have no idea what the dots mean and slap the tyre on where ever it lands which means more weight is needed to balance the tyre.

I knew that the dot should be lined up with the valve but never had the nerve to point it out to the fitter.
No I do not mean the Quick Fit Fitter, I would not trust them with a bicycle tyre

Well, I had looked up PCD on the web and the only thing that came up was: "Pussycat Dolls", which I didn't think related to wheels by any stretch of the imagination.

Same here, so I added wheels to narrow it down to the right area.

A look at Wikipedia suggests that 3 letter acronyms are taking over the world!

155X14 spare fitts in our boot , if you have a sissor jack store it between the boot floors , this moves the false floor up slightly giving more room when moving the spare .

I'd hazard a guess that those are widened A35 wheels.

No sign of any widening, Spridget wheels had been suggested to me
