wiping the smile off my face

Post by Peetee »

The wipers are refusing to do anything now

In trying to work out the problem I have discovered that every wiring diagram that appears in the official workshop manual show two wires entering the wiper motor but mine, quite clearly has 3. :o Not helpful!!

As for the switch, can anyone tell me if the feed to this will show + or _ on a negative earth car? if I can establish this perhaps I can make some alternative feed for the mean time.

Don't know if this will help at all but the Haynes Minor 1000 (1956-1971) Manual wiring diagram shows three connections to the wiper motor. These same diagrams are also in the BMC Workshop Manual.
The diagrams showing two connections will be for earlier models without the wiper self parking facility.
Green wire - an ignition switched feed from either one side of the fuel gauge or the voltage stabiliser. (depending on year)
Black wire - wiper motor to earth.
Black/Green wire - to the wiper switch then to earth via a black wire.
So I would guess you need to check there is a supply to the motor (green wire), with the ignition on, first. If your fuel gauge is working, then other than a break in the cable or a connection has dropped off, this should be o.k.
Others may be able to advise further.

Thanks '57, all sorted now. the problem was a dirty connection to the motor. when that was done something blew the fuse and I didn't notice - although I had checked this before I started.
She's all ready for the MOT. I've undersealed and waxoyled the wheelarches so they are as good as the rest of the underside now. The only outstanding job is the quarterlights. The new rubbers seem to be a bit oversize and the glass and frames just won't sit in properly.

Glad it's sorted, fortunately nothing too drastic.
