Headlamp alignment problem

Post by winger300 »

Hi,

I'm having a problem with aligning the headlamps on my Minor. The past couple of MOTs have always failed on the alignment being too high, the problem is that the vertical alignment adjustment on one side is already at the top of its adjustment range, any more and I can't fit the chrome rims over!

I've checked the front ride height measuring the different between the heights of the inner eyebolt and lower fulcrum pin, both sides measure close to 4cm. (As per the manual).

The rear springs look ok, and were replaced a few years ago.

Is there anything else I can do?

Could it be a defective headlamp or bulb (They are halogen upgrades)?

Unlikely - but possible - try swapping the units side to side ? More likely a problem with the wing alignment- or the fixing of the headlamp bowl to the wing. Could 'help' it for the Mot by removing everything from the boot - spare wheel included - and only a smallest amount of fuel in the tank!

Find yourself a level piece of ground and a wall to set them up..
Drive up to the wall on mainbeam and mark the centre of the beams with chalk on the wall (at night or dusk)
Reverse straight back from the wall and compare the beam centres with the chalk marks.
You may be able to fit a couple of washers behind the adjusting screws or adjust one screw to compensate for another.
There are different designs of adjusters, some have two screws and some have three
