Painting the engine bay

Post by Simon83 »

My engine bay (and some components) are looking a bit dull and dirty so I want to paint them. I've got some radiator paint in a spray - this be OK for the radiator / air filter / heater.

But when it comes to painting the bay itself like above the arches / battery tray holder and so on does it have to be heat resistant paint or will normal hammerite do? It's not really an area which gets hot but am just wondering?
Many thanks,
Simon

I believe its normally just painted the same colour as the rest of the car. The only reason it isn't is because at some point in the past the car has just had a quick outer respray.

Thanks Alex / Anne, but should it be heat resistant paint for areas like the insides of the wings etc. ?

No, they shouldn't get that hot unless the engine catches fire. :o

If it doesn't work, you're not hitting it with a big enough hammer.

The paint used in the engine bay is the same paint as used to spray the rest of the car. i.e. If you car is Almond Green then the engine bay should be Almond Green to match. The engine itself is usually painted with engine paint a mid olive green (available from morris suppliers/ motor spares shops). Shocks/windscreen wiper motor /rad top gloss spray black

Land Rover Mid Bronze Green is apparently a good match for the engine.
