Engine Number - please help

Post by netsroht »

Dear All,

I´m from Germany and I´ll have an engine in an Austin Healey Sprite MK1 (Frogeye) which is for sure not orignal. The engine number is:

RKM1127E 14252

Someone told me that this engine was used in a Morris Marina - can it be? Or was it use in a Mini! What kind of engine is it?

Is this engine more or less structurally identical to the one which was used in the AH Sprite MK1?

I have no idea about the following as well - which will be good to know:

1) Power (cc):
2) Built:
others

many thanks for all the answers and support

I can't find any record of that engine code but the AH Sprite/MG Midget engine was available in 3 sizes, 948, 1098, 1275. The engine size should be cast into the block or on a plate on the manifold side
Engine codes for the AH were 9CC/9CG, 10CC/10CG, 12CC/12CG/12CD/12CJ/12V.
The most obvious difference between the 1275 Sprite and Marina/Ital engines is the position of the upside down oil filter at the back right of the engine on the Marina/Ital. It is unlikely to be a Mini or other transverse engine as that would require considerable adaption from transverse to in line.

Hi Mike,

thanks for your answer - but the plate on the block shows the number: RKM1127E 14252

Sure and no doubt that this engine does not belong to the Sprite MK1 but what else can I do to identify this engine?

Any idea?

cheers

No - that must be some kind of 'reconditioned' engine number and means nothing. So - we need some other clues - or some pictures! On the side of the engine where the inlet/exhaust are fitted - low down at the front - it may have '950' cast into the block = 948cc engine, or it may have an aluminium plate fixed there with '1100' on it = 1098cc engine. Also - look behind the exhaust manifild at the block - does it have removable covers fixed there - or is it a solid casting ?
Of course - it's possible it's not an A series engine at all!

Hi,

so, the only two open questions are:
1) When was is built/produced?
2) To what kind of car does this engine normally belongs to?

Many thanks for all the help and support

To chcek - take the rocker cover off and tell us the cylinder head casting number . If 12G 202 then it's a Minor engine - if 12G295 then it's a Spridget engine. Produced from 1964 to 71.

I did ask you to take the rocker cover off - and report the cylinder head number - which you haven't done. However - that is indeed a Marina (or Ital) engine at 1275 cc unless it has been overbored of course. And it has been fitted with a sandwich plate to provide oil cooler connections at the filter mounting.
Note to self - 'Unlearn' that 'RKM1' means a recon 1098 unit..............

That's quite a tuned engine for a Sprite! Is the suspension also uprated? (I'm another Sprite owner :) ).

Hi - not yet.

But the suspension will be changed in one week - now I know the engine type and can start working - during my checks I found out that the suspension at the rear is really in not in a good condition. It is still the original one and I guess I will change it to a hydraulic one.

" change it to a hydraulic one." ?? That air filter will be costing you power -it's far too shallow. Is it a 40 - or 45 Weber ?

It´s a 45 Weber. You´re right, the air filter is may too shallow - but for the Frogeye absolutely enough - I´m really happy with this - should I change  , have to try 8)
