I stuck a thermometer into the top of the radiator when the gauge was reading over 90 Centigrade, and the thermometer read 78. This is a healthy temperature?

Therefore, there is certainly a problem with the sender/gauge .

Yes that seems to be true. However given that the gauge is about 12 degrees fast and you say you get running temperature indications of about 115 degrees then the engine is too hot even with the gauge error? It must be close to boiling so there is also something else wrong?

The radiator temperature measurement is always a bit lower than the head reading - your gauge is not too far wrong. You should remove the radiator and reverse flush it with a hose up the lower connection (seal it with rags) and see how much crud comes out!

Haha, maybe I was a little over-optimistic.
