First problem

still no luck with this I ordered 2 flashers from ESM thinking these would be from a Morris Minor specialist would work but no! the indicators flash so fast that they're nearly continuously on!! What's happening?? I have 8 flashers none of them work properly except for the lucas one but the lucas one has something broken in it and I'm assuming it's the thing that makes the bulb on the switch light

You are using normal bulbs - not LED bulbs ??

no normal bulbs! my biggest question is y with a lucas flasher indicators work and with unbranded or other flashers they dont work!

I bought an unbranded replacement and after about a day it wouldn't work. Replaced it with a second hand, rusty ,horrible looking, 40 year old original lucas one and it's still going.

Maybe there is something in the car's genetic makeup that only allows it to use Lucas parts

That's the problem with some parts suppliers, it's very misleading and very annoying

You must have some kind of wiring fault. If you short out the two flasher wires together - do the indicator lights come on each side - as they should, obviously not flashing!!? To test the flasher units - get 2 X 21 watt bulbs - wire them together in parallel, then wire the set in series with the flasher and connect to the battery - do they flash ?? Just a thought - you do have 21 watt bulbs in the car ??

You should have a flasher unit rated at 42W or 2x21W with 3 terminals. P = Light green to warning light, B = Green to fuse, L = Green/Brown to indicator switch. The flasher unit could also be numbered L, X, P. Try the indicators with the flasher hanging loose, if it still blows the fuse disconnect the green wire and connect a test light between the wire and the car body. If that still blows then you have short circuit between the fuse and the test light.
Check that out and we will go on to the next stage

yes roy bulbs are 21w

Mike thanks for the wiring explanation, tried another unbranded flasher unit which I bought and the indicators worked perfeclty just like the lucas one but the bulb on the switch isn't working (bulb is good) so I'm guessing someting wrong with the switch?

Right - so the wiring is fine. If the flasher doesn't have that third terminal - it won't work the light on the stalk. Again you can test it by pushing 12 v up the light wire - and see if it works!

To sum up.
You have a 3 pin flasher unit of the correct rating, wired as per instructions.
The indicators all work correctly but not the warning light
Does it still blow the fuse?
If it does then there is a short in the light green wire, a bare section of wire?
If it does not blow a fuse then the switch is not earthing correctly.
As previously suggested remove the light green wire from the flasher and connect it to the fuse box. The warning light should work. (You could connect it to the battery but that would risk burning the wiring out if you had a short circuit)
