clutch relay problems

today i triied to sort out the clutch actuating mechanism on my 1955 series 2. the car has a 1098 box and engine. it however retains the original pedal.the problem i have is the secondary actuating rod (the one that goes from relay to gearbox) fouls up on the relay shaft. i fitted it with the rods dogleg on the gearbox side and the problem was eliminated, but then the pull is wrong. is there two different relay shafts, or is this a common problem in a 803 with 1098 conversion. i am at loss as to what to try next. anyone who has done such a conversion would probably know how to go about it. thanks in advance, marcus

ps i currently have the "late type" relay shaft from esm- does this effect any thing?

Unless you also fitted the 1098 flywheel and clutch (and thick 1098 type backplate) - you probably need the 948 release lever and carbon thrust in the gearbox. Is it just a problem of the rod being too long (or too short ) ?

i presume that the engine and box have all these 1098 parts- i got the car off of WPR678B (carlo) and it was apparently an engine a gearbox that had previously been fitted in his mothers '61, but is a 1098. the gearbox is the ribbed type.

the problem occurs when the pedal is depressed. the long rod cannot return enough to disengage the clutch, as it fouls the dog leg. the actual rod seems to be a good size

carlo, if there is was a plan for this please let me now- it will save me untold hours of hassle!

can anyone confirm that both split pins go facing the gearbox as apposed to the chassis side. the workshop manual shows it both ways

The clutch and brake pedals were moved further apart at some stage, I don't know if the linkage was changed, certainly th Series MM uses a different linkage.
Have a look through the clutch inspection hole on the opposite side to the clutch lever and see if you can identify which thrust bearing you have fitted. The 1098 bearing has the pivots to the rear of the bearing and the 948 has the pivots level with the bearing.

i beleive when the a series engine went in the cltch operating system changed. to save a load of hassle, does anyone have a car they are dismantling/restoring that wouldn't mind taking a picture of a correctly set up relay? this would be very much appreciated.

good man- exactly what i was after!
i think the next plan is to use the plate type system rather than the rod, and also, check the thrust bearing for wear.
i am also thinking of changing to the late type clutch pedal.
