its the front bumper mount that goes through to the inner wing and welded there
you will need a new one and have the old oe cut out of the inner wing and a new one welded in

you may be able to weld an extra bit of thread on the stub but doubtful

As Aupickup says the only proper way of fixing it is to get another bumper iron and weld it in. It fastened to the car in two places, one is in the inner wing and it also mounted by a welded on bracket on the front of the tie plates, immediately behind the front grill panel.

One quick fix you could do is to grind down the remains of the old stud and weld on a new 1/2 BSF bolt on the end of the existing bumper iron. Its a bit of a bodge but it will save you a awful lot of work on what looks like a very decent car, you'll have to remove most of the front of the car to replace the complete bumper iron otherwise, and I bet that chrome work wont come off nicely, its always broken/threads stripped in my experience.

You'd probably have to shape the head of the bolt to fit the bumper washers/collar over the top.

You could drill/tap the broken end and screw in a stud, then screw an adapter onto the stud. Cosmetically it would be fine (and probably least work too) but of course won't have the strength of the original - but i can't honestly see that matters!

If it broke off broke off that easily then it needed replacing anyway. It takes a lot of effort to snap a bar that size if it is sound

not very clear in the picture but are there still threads left on the stub, the bumper iron butts up against the wider shoulder, try to see if there is enough sticking through the bumper bracket, you might be lucky enough to be able to clean up or re thread the stub.

Thanks for your advice will let you know what I decide to do, like the idea of the 1/2 BSF bolt on the end.
Thanks
Brian

Is that drilled and tapped into the old steel - or just 'stuck on' ?? If drilled and tapped - a very easy job - it will be fine. If 'stuck' it will fall off at the first bump. It's quite a job to weld in a new tube etc - so i would concentrate on fixing that one!

I agree with Roy: don't take any risks with front bumpers. One of the best-known accidents in the long history of crashes during the testing of early Rolls-Royces and Bentleys occurred when one end of an experimental Wilmot Breeden harmonic damper bumper fell off during testing of the fourth prototype Derby Bentley. It jammed under the front axle, something broke, and the car flipped end over end. The test driver and passengers, including Jack Barclay, all escaped, but Rolls-Royce immediately modified the design to include a U-shaped bracket to restrain the bumper if it the main attachment failed.

At very least, get some rope, baler twine, cable ties, or bungees on it before taking it on the road.
