should i use synthethic or 2 pack to respray
should i use synthethic or 2 pack paint to do a complete respray. synthetic paint is coming in at 1/4 of the price of 2 pack. Has anyone used this paint? how does it finish? how much paint would be required to respray a Traveller inside and out including the engine bay?

Not sure what paint is best, I'm sure someone who can help will be along soon.
But if you look HERE it says:

So to do a complete car? I'd say it will not be cheap if you're not doing it yourself.Been quoted a price to spray rear wing panel the fuel filler is on and the edge of roof(side of back window) £250

If you have a proper booth and breathing equipment then go for 2k. Synthetic is ok on machinery or items that the finish is not important. Synthetic is very difficult to do anything with once its sprayed , ie flat out runs, dust etc is nigh on impossible as it never really sets hard, so flatting it simply rolls the paint off. If you try and blow in a section that has been flatted then you then run the risk of reaction. This is why its cheap.
A good 2K like Max Meyer is about £35-45 per litre, you will need activator and thinners too, but this will give an excellent finish.
To do inside and out will take a minimum of 5 litres maybe more, depending on how well you can spray, the colour pigmentation etc. My trav took 9litres, but then I was being a perfectionist.

thanks jonathan
2k paint is costing 120 euro a litre in ireland so you can do the math very expensive, is 9 litres with the hardners and thinners or is than 9 litre of 2k paint. any suggestion on retailer that ship to ireland, most wont.
Thanks

If 2K is too expensive then try cellulose, which is a bit cheaper, but may be limited on colours.
5L of paint should be enough plus activator and thinners or just thinners if going celly.
I'd do a search of local paint stores to find the best deals or simply as at your local bodyshop.

My local supplier is still mixing cellulose to standard colours or to match a sample, as are some ebay and other internet suppliers, but I'd repeat the advice I gave to Josh a couple of weeks ago: if you need to ask about 2K, you probably have neither the knowledge nor the facilities to use it safely. It really is nasty stuff, in a far more insidious way than cellulose.
I prefer the appearance of cellulose for older cars, too.

Jono mentioned it - you MUST NOT attempt to spray 2k paint without all the correct safety equipment - or it WILL kill you. That means air fed breathing apparatus (not just a daft wee mask), and ideally a properly extracted paint spray booth.

I'd add too, if you go for a home respray do it with a low pressure set up. Less gets blown into the atmosphere, more goes onto the car, which in turns means less complaints from the neighbours through the smell or potential overspray. Winners all round!

Re: should i use synthethic or 2 pack to respray
Thanks to all for comments but i think Jonathan has given me the answer I was looking for. was looking to know what the finish was going to be like on synthetic versus 2k . Lucky enough have facilities to build booth if 2k is what we use have a shed 45 ft x 25ft and no neighbours for miles. A friend of a friend is going to do the paint job and he has over 30 years experience with paints and such, painter by trade who has his own gear.
Wanted to know how the paint finished off how easy it is to work with and if it finishes as good as 2k etc......
Also how much to buy as he has not painted a morris traveller before.
managed to get a much cheaper price for the 2k by shopping around.
Thanks to everyone for the great feedback.
Must post some picture of the progress to date. nearly all of the welding work is finished now and hoping to start on the respray in the next couple of weeks. Has only taken 17months to get this far.......

For me - the 2k stuff always has a kind of 'artificial' sheen to it. Also more difficult to do repairs/touch up in future. I would stick with cellulose!

2 pack is harder wearing, fades very little
for an everyday car i would use 2 pack

Out of the gun 2K can look over shiney, a knock back with mopping compound soon sees to this, followed by a general polish. I'd challenge anyone to tell the difference on our cars.
Old wives tale about blowing in, same rules apply as per celly
.
Agree with Dennis too, plus 2K takes much less maintenance, as celly relies on elbow grease to retain the shine.

Re: should i use synthethic or 2 pack to respray
Polish on - polish off. Can you really touch up small damage on a 2k car using a rattle can ?

Re: should i use synthethic or 2 pack to respray
Any automotive, bodyshop 'paintstore ' will do a can for around £10 a pop.
Re: should i use synthethic or 2 pack to respray
Ohh! Interesting - didn't know that - new thing learned today. And will the fumes still kill you ? I assume the 2k curing doesn't start until it hits the air - so stuff in can stays 'liquid' ??

Re: should i use synthethic or 2 pack to respray
To be truthful the 2K rattle can is a single pack paint , same 2K properties but refined for the can application.
I imagine that its 'not good ' for you, so take precautions. 2K will not kill you over night. I know several 'old school' sprayers who have never used air fed or proper 2K masks , they are still here and in their late 70's -80's. Liken it to smoking, it will kill you but some will die of old age and natural causes, before it does.

The difference is those sprayers would have been in a booth where most of the isocyanates would have been removed by the extraction. Either that or good ventilation in their work space. There have been cases where home sprayers working in small garages have been overcome and died of isocyanate poisoning. It is nasty stuff. If you have to do any spraying in a garage, then anyone, please use a carbon mask and use cellulose paint as this will not kill you. 2K is nasty stuff and can and has killed!jonathon wrote:To be truthful the 2K rattle can is a single pack paint , same 2K properties but refined for the can application.

celly is easier for the home sprayer to use- for many reasons.
Cheers John - all comments IMHO
