Right now I am embroiled in scraping the underbody tar off my Morrie (so much fun...). However, while pulling it all apart, I noted that pretty much everything in the brake/clutch pedal system looked worn out. The linkages going to the clutch all had great big oval holes. No wonder the pedal was nearly to the floor...
Call me a heretic, but the brake/clutch system is one thing I really don't like about the Morrie design.
*The brake master cylinder is very hard to get at, and when topping it up you will inevitably spill brake fluid into the chassis (attacking the paint) or on the carpet
*The clutch system seems stupidly over-complex with all those linkages. I guess they hadn't thought to use a cable...
I am a novice though... maybe there are advantages to the design?
Anyway, it all needs replacing or rebuilding. However, I am seriously tempted to fit a more modern style pedal system (i.e. mounted on the firewall), preferably with a hydraulic clutch. Is this considered heinous and non-traditional? Searching the forum, I see mention of using a Marina pedal box. My preference would be for a Toyota Corolla unit, mostly because I used to have one, it had a nice simple hydraulic clutch, the parts are cheap and common, and 80s-90s models are piled high in any wreckers yard these days.
Questions for anyone with experience in these things: Are there any pitfalls? Are there issues with matching the brake master cylinder to the rest of the system (i.e. volume, pressure, pedal force, etc)? Could I use the booster or use the brake master cylinder without the booster? Is it easy to find something which fits given the sloping floor/firewall in the Morrie?
