Maximum wheel or rim width?

Post by foghorn14 »

Will a 6 inch wide wheel or rim fit on my Morris Minor without creating a tyre rubbing situation? How wide can I safely go without creating a problem and without modifying anything?

That will entirely depend on the offset of the wheel you are fitting. Measure back from the hub face to the upright and this is the maximum offset you can use.

Problem at the front is usually with the tyre rubbing on the kingpin - and at the rear with rubbing on the wing flange. As above - measure and find out! But is simple terms - yes - it is possible to use 6" wide rims - but they will need careful selection, and the fronts may not be same offset as the rears.

I have 14x6 wheels on mine with a 12P offset, as recommended by the wheel manufacturer. This gives the same track measurement as standard (important here in NZ). The tyres are 175/70x14 which have plenty of clearance at the back and a finger width to the kingpin on the front.

Thanks for the replies. I bought three Chevrolet Vega 13" wheels on ebay hoping they would fit. Unexpectedly, they were miss-matched. Two are 6 inches and one is 5 inches wide. I will find another 5 incher and put them on the front and the 6s on the rear. Maybe the missmatch is a blessing. Still, I am hoping the offset is correct. We shall see.

Just as a comparison, I have 14x8" slot mags on the back with standard wings, huge balloon tyres(can't remember the profile) and its lowered and there is no rubbing at all, some how  . The fronts are 13x5.5 and are fine.

Don't think they look that bad
Thing is with 8" rears as on the below the whole tyre needs to be inside the wing which makes the shaping back to the original 1/4 panel very tricky. We do extended flared sections to bring the 1/4 panel outwards at the rear and blend in better.

Wide rims = 235/50/15's and Toyo 888's and gret grip, fronts are 205/50/15 to make the best of the AP Racing 4 pots.Think they are sprayed black centres now.
Good news re exhaust  :D

Safely a 195-205. The fronts on ours are 6", they have been used very hard with no problems at all :D
