Whilst having yet another quiet word with Trev at the side of the road this morning, thankfully within walking distance of home, I noticed 950 stamped on the side of the engine casing.
I thought I'd read that this denoted a 948cc engine. But it's supposed (according to the V5 etc) be a 1098. Did the later engines still have 950 stamped on them or have I got a smaller engine in there?

You have been done! The rocker box is 1098. Don't change the diff for 4.22 or you will have no acceleration when loaded. LCVs kept the 4.55 diff with the 1098 engine. You should still get more than 60mph, maybe the timing is out.
I have a 1098 cluttering up my garage but it needs a rebuild

I had enough trouble bleeding the brakes today - I don't think I'm quite ready for a rebuild.

I don't feel as if I've been done. So it's a smaller engine - it is at least a Morris Minor engine and it does actually run. With my car buying skills both these things are a bonus.
Do I need to tell insurance/DVLA or is this overkill ?

You should tell the insurance, but it will not effect your premium at all. In my experiance with the DVLA I wouldn't bother as they wil start to ask you a load of questions about who changed it and when and will probably force you into getting an engineers report which you will have to pay for.....
When the engine goes bang (eventualy) re-fit a 1098 and all will be normal again

ive got a 948 in mine, just managed to push 60mph but does feel it has no more to give. an engine rebiuld is relitivly easy, just take your time and torque all your nuts and mark the timing for when you put it back together. and make sure everything goes back in the right order.
I dunno how you reckon the 'rocker box' is a 1098 one ? Could easily be 948 - BUT - it does have the later oil filler cap - but easily (and often) swapped. What I do see is that the engine seems to have a temperature gauge connection in the head - where 948 heads had no place for such a thing. So - it's either a 1098 head or a later 998 Mini head that's been fitted. Next time you have the rocker cover off to adjust the valve gaps - look to see if the head casting is 12G 202 - which is the 1098 head. IF that head has been fitted - then it has better flow and slightly larger inlet valves - BUT unless it was skimmed - the Comp Ratio will now be criminally low which may explain the poor performance. Another check will be - to look closely at the speedo - and tell us the 'tpm' number which is small 4 digit beside the mileage reading. Any chance of a picture showing the inlet manifold and carb ? And - what is the engine number - from the plate on the engine - not the V5! I agree with others - just leave the DVLA and insurance out of it at the moment or it may get all complicated.
As for 'puffing' - well - I can see that happening with that Transit in the back - but the lighter load in your other picture should be fine !

I think it's 1504 - does that sound right?

I think the plate on the engine reads 8025 EP 1021 and it also has A A stamped on it
Thanks for all the feedback

1504 TPM is correct for a 4.55 diff
Car and manifold is from a 948 engine (or a very early 1098)
Engine number is a recon number so it means nothing unless the "80" is infact "8G" ?? Which I suspect it maybe as this would make it a factory recon 1098 unit...

If the engine has 950 cast on it then it is a 948 block. Check to see whether it has a smooth or ribbed gear box.
I suppose we could have a poke around it on Wednesday.
Hard to imagine they would do a re-con 1098 - on a 950 block. The tpm is indeed right for 4.55 diff - but someone says the LCVs had that anyway -with 1098 engine ? So - just the mystery of the temperature gauge connection on the head! I suppose a crude measure of the engine stroke could be done - with a chop stick down a plug hole and turn the engine over on the handle. Would be interesting!
It's very unlikely but worth investigation as spray seemed sure it was the "original" engine in the vehicle.... an"8G" "10xx" engine number is a factory recon 1098 unit. No guarantees that is correct either of course but it may turn out interesting....

Just check the points gap and adjust if necessary. Should take less than 10minutes if you have a cup of tea at the same time.
As long as you have a spark at the plugs it will be OK. 948 tappet chest covers as well.
