Get some 'RED Hermitite' semi hardening and available from Halfords, very good stuff.

The pulling power of a Turbo Diesel! The voices may not be real, but they have good ideas.

I know it is frowned upon by the purists ,and 'real' mechanics ,but I use that Hermetite a lot ,it cleans off easily with petrol ,and a scraper ,and does the trick on rocker box covers !

You should not need anything on a water pump and the grease is often used just to place the gasket, a rocker box can be a different issue.

I would recommend to avoid any hardening sealant - not even to have any in your toolbox. (The semi hardening stuff is ok)
The hardening stuff has a habit of being squeezed out internally and then lumps get into oilways etc.. scrapping the engine.
I've used a light smear of grease on waterpump gaskets and it's been ok although I don't know if it is a good idea or a bad idea. Remember that grease can expand and turns runny when hot so don't use it on headgaskets etc..
