Wiring Question

Post by ADO16 »

I'm currently working on a friends 1958 MM Tourer and noticed that when I was studying his wiring harness I found that he has a Direction Indicator Relay Unit along with a set up for Trafficators. Can this support both turn signal switch on the steering column and a trafficator switch below the dash? It's my understanding you could only have one or the other, is this true? He told me that he retrofitted the trafficators at some point during the refit of components after it was painted.
I'm just finishing the tail end of his restoration for him because the original person quit at some point for reasons unknown.

No reason why the two systems should not co-exist.

You will need separate flasher units for each side to stop the trafficators going up and down as the lights flash!! I had a specail wiring loom made up for this, but you could adapt the exsisitng one and put the extra flashers under the dash board. There is a wiring diagram on here, I will see if I can post link.

David,

One more question. After I've wired up the Directional Indicator Unit, I can then wire the two flashers units into the harness under the dash as per the schematic you attached in order to be able to use both Trafficators plus the front and rear turn indicators, if I use the turn signal switch/stalk on the steering column?
Thanks again.

It will obviously be possible - but may need a couple of relays.

Yes it should all work off the one indicator stalk, I have them working off the trafficator switches on the lowlight and the splitscreen traveller.

I do the same, with both semaphores and flashers being turned on by the column indicator switch. I then have a separate hidden switch to turn off the trafficators when on motorways or other fast roads - don't think they were designed for modern day speeds!
