whats the difference between a short and a standard moggy engine? presumably the length or is that it?

A short engine is a rebuilt engine block. A long engine is a rebuilt block and head (which should be unleaded) and should also include the sump.

The description of a "short" engine generally means that it is the basic engine block without "ancillaries" attached. e.g no starter motor, distributer, coil, carb,manifolds, etc.
When buying such, you/ the garage will remove all the bits from the old engine to attach them to the new/ reconditioned short engine.

Yes - just basic block with pistons/rods/crank/timing cover (and timing gears) should be included - or at least - they used to be!

Dont feel a fool. Short or tall would be more appropriate phrases.
