petrol tank

Got a leak in the Travellers tank (a '61 model)....Are Traveller tanks the same as saloons? Cant afford a new one

so looking for a secondhand one, just need to know which to look for

No they are different. the fill pipe is different on a trav

Can the leak be fixed with Petropatch? That's how I fixed a leak in the fuel tank on my car.

I think that the tanks are the same, it is the flexible hose which has a bend in it to reach the side filler. The early tanks are 5 gall. and the later tanks are 6 1/2 gall.
Have you identified the source of the leak. It could be the sender unit on top of the tank.

Dont think its from the sender...only put less than a couple of gallons in. It seems to be coming from the bottom of the tank to the front right of the drain plug. Thought of a patch, but might as well replace the tank...cars not on the road yet.

Can anyone else confirm if the tanks are same or different?

I thought they were the same. Just a longer rubber hose for the trav.
The van and pickup ones are different though, with the neck in a different place.

The Moss catalogue P. 36 shows only two tanks, 5 & 6 1/2 gall. and lists a variety of hoses to cover different models. It also lists two filler caps, changing at 482059.

Is there supposed to be a gasket or somesuch between the tank and the floor? I don't see anything listed on the vendors websites.

there is normally just a mastic type of seal, maybe dum dum
the same as should be on the gearbox tunnel

LCV tanks are different youd be ok with a saloon tank

When you do mastic the tank, just make sure that the fuel sender can still get an earth.....

Saloon and Traveller tanks are the SAME! Don't rely on any patch method - except as emergency get-you-home measure. Buy a new tank - they are not expensive - compared to some I know !

Then invest in a tin of "petseal". It's like fibreglass resin but thinner, you mix the hardener into it and swill it around the tank and it coats it with an extremely impervious layer. Also encases any loose bits of rust and stops any further problems. Works a treat and can be got for £19.99 for 1/2 litre if you search the ether (not ebay!)
