Inlet and Exhausts

Post by ricombi »

If I wanted to fit a single Weber sidedraught to a 1098 engine, what kind of inlet manifold can i use? can i use a mini inlet manifold??
also is there anywhere i can get a larger bore exhaust and manifold for the engine??

Yes, the Minor 1098 and the Mini 1100 engines are basically the same.

Yes, Maniflow and the Minor centre at Birmingham (possibly Bath too). The Birmingham centre manifolds are stainless and I personally have experienced a lot of problems due to them cracking. They might be OK on a standard(ish) 1098 though.

Incidently why a Weber?? SUs are much easier to set up, the performance is comparible and they are much more economical. I used a HS4 from a Mini with a AAM needle and it was pretty good.

You may have clearance problems fitting a side draught Weber to a moggie. You would have to work out the space from the cylinder head to the interior wing, allowing for a performance filter and the carb itself. There are several lengths of purpose made Weber fitment inlet manifolds avaliable. A good Mini tuner could explain the options. Try looking under 'manifold' on ebay to get an idea of the look of the things.
Older and more confused than I could ever imagine possible.

I'd second Cam's point: Why bother, the SU is far superior for general service. About the only thing that will stop an SU is water in the fuel, wherease just about anything (like looking at it) will stop a Webber.

You need to cut off the inlet part of the existing manifold (its all in one) to fit a different inlet manifold, if you friend has the mini exhaust manifold as well and its from a 1000cc mini its the same outlet as the minor.

I used a Mini alloy inlet manifold. I have used Minisport ones and an Oselli Torquemaster. You can still buy them from Mini specialists OR scour the scrapyards for old 'boy racered' Minis as quite a few had alloy inlets added to them in their final years............. my green one did:

Cam. What is it with you and green?
I don't know really. I have not chosen the colour of ANY of my cars! I have had other colours too you know!

See http://homepage.ntlworld.com/cameron.shaw/cars.htm for proof!

They do say that green cars are unlucky, and I am phenomenally unlucky (also born on Friday 13th)!! So maybe they have chosen me!

Anyway enough thread hijacking for now.......................
