Duplex timing kits
Hi guys and galls has anyone fitted a duplex timing kit to a 1098. I am fed up with the rattle and am not satified that any of the usual suppliers chains are up to scratch. Ihave had to fit several single chain kits to so call rebuilt engines after only 20K miles. Any help on this would be most appreciated. I understand that drilling the countersunk holes is not a problem once you realise they are american spec bolts and have a 85 degree angle on them where can I buy the right countersink from? All for now.
Just grind a 1/2" drill bit to the angle! But a duplex is not the quiestest - best to fit a chain tensioner as fitted to the later Minis. Kits from Minispares and others. You also need to source a timing case with the bulge in the side - to accomodate the tensioner. It works - it's quiet!

The cover isn't cheap new (there may be cheaper suppliers) - or you may be able to source one second hand ....

Minisport seem to be slightly cheaper http://www.minisport.com/acatalog/info_LJR10168.html
DSN seem to do the tensioner kit quite cheaply - but I don't see the cover - you could ask them!
The Minor suppliers (DSN of course do Minis and Minors!) are missing out by not providing this as a complete kit - with simple fitting instructions.

By far the cheapest potential rattle "cure" is a secondhand simplex tensioner set from a latish Mini or the Metro. As discussed in a previous thread, this can also give you a damper pulley "thrown-in" if find a donor engine/vehicle at a breakers yard, which is a worthwhile upgrade- must be, or BMC themselves wouldn't have ended up fitting it to all their engines!
Decent chain of any type is difficult to source at a sensible price nowadays. Wippermann or Sedis are very good, but you would faint at the price! My approach is to look on Ebay for NOS items, you can often find good quality at good price that way.
