Pickup front screen pitted

Post by capnblack »

The front screen on my 71 Austin pickup appears to be pitted somehow. When the sun is low in the sky I get an annoying reflection off the screen. Tried all sorts to clean it, with little or no success. I wonder if it is damaged by previous grinding sparks or similar. Any advice? Probably need to replace screen and the rubber at the same time. I am told that the black rubber insert used on the van & pickup is not availble. Anyone got a good undamaged screen, or should I invest in an new one?

A happy Christmas and happy, healthy New Year to all.

It does sound like It has suffered from some grinding sparks in the past I had a car like this and if you looked really closely you could just make out the tiny marks.
Cheers

my pickup screen is badly pitted - the only good thing about that is that it's due for a new screen rubber anyway.

There's nothing special about a Minor LCV screen - any Minor 1000 screen will fit (new or second hand). If you want to go Concours, you might find yourself looking for a good second hand screen from a car of the same year...
As for the screen rubber insert - I expect you can re-use the existing one. The reason they get replaced on Saloons is because they want new shiny chrome.

Maybe your insurance co will pay for most of it - if it 'accidentally' gets broken by a flying stone........

Did commercials have an insert in the screen rubber originally? My 1960 has a one piece screen rubber.....

Also, black of chrome plastic inserts are available for the modern screen rubbers that take the horrible plasticy inserts.

The 1960 style screen rubbber was one piece for cars and LCV's. The LCV's just didn't get the finisher trim.
For the later screen rubber, an insert is needed to make it fit properly.

Note too that the screen inserts are not interchangeable and the rubbers are specific to each.
Older and more confused than I could ever imagine possible.

Ray - are you saying the rubbers are the same? On my LCV there is no provision for the finisher trim ie a slot for it to sit in, or were the slots sealed up with something?

I know my saloons pretty well, but I'm only a novice when it comes to LCV's. A 1960 saloon would have a 1 piece rubber, but as you said already, it would have a slot to fit the finisher piece. All 4 of my LCV's have been later ones so I could only guess about the early 1000 LCV screen rubbers (and no better than anyone else's guess). I was deliberately vague about the 1 piece rubbers, as I wasn't sure if they just used a saloon rubber with no trim, or if they had special 'non-slotted' ones. By the sounds of your screen rubber, they were different items.
As Dennis just mentioned - his 66 did have the finisher in the rubber. Hopefully he'll be back to tell us if it was a black or chrome finisher strip.
