how can you tell if a car has original reg number or has been re-registered

Well if the car has an age related plate it normally says on the V5 that its non transferrable, and you can always contact Gaydon who would have the original details.

Gaydon do NOT keep details of registrations issued as this was done by the dealer rather than the factory!

Go to the DVLA Licencing on line website and enter your car make and registration. If it gives a different date of registration to the date that the car was built then that is a good clue that it has been re registered. Not 100% as it could be an import or some other reason.

Some early age related plates are transferable, before they sussed that folk could sell them on. However, all age related plates are from previously unused number series, which would have been allocated to lesser populated areas of the country and never got used before year letetrs came in. Examples such as:
Anything with an S in the last two letters such as MVS123 CSV123 PSL123 KAS123 are all Scottish ones used as age related plates. Letter F is a clue too! MFF123, HFO123 are Welsh (Merionith and Radnorshire) and were never issued when current. Earlier ones which were current and original would have been something like FO 1234 which would have been issued in the mid 50s
Recently issued ones are numbers first with an X in (Think they're just making them up as they go now) 123XUB 123UXC You tend to see plentyon eBay which have these series plates on ie: just had the original numbers sold and now the car is for sale...
No doubt there are others that I've missed but thats a reasonable rule of thumb I think.

Perhaps someone should compile a list of age related plates used as a guide, as contrary to what people say it does make a difference to the value of a car, wether its viewed as part of the vehicles history or as a potential 'cash back' option to be used when needed.

Well, I started looking into it a bit, to produce a sort of definitive list and the ever helpful Google came up with this, so I think this will save me the bother! Looks fairly comprehensive:

It says UXA - UXE were issued as age related plates, mine was reregistered and given UXR.

The list is probably a bit out of date. (04 is the most recent date given) I think they were working throught the UX* series fairly recently. I had one registered earlier this year and got 665XUR (quickly replaced with a personal plate btw) which dosnt appear on that list.
