Hi my name is Bill Clarke I've just joined MMOC but I've had a 1967 smoke grey 4 dr moggy for about three years sitting on my drive. I bought her from a neighbour who had her in his back yard for about 6-7 years ( funny it's a she I've called her Muddle MDL361G) He'd done most of the hard graft of welding etc and just tired of the project. I've done quite a bit myself and need to check the brakes before she goes in for an MOT. I must be mad because I recently brought another Moggy this time a 1957 dark green traveller. I bought it on ebay and to be honest it needs a lot more doing to it than I was led to believe, but hey ho it will just take longer and cost more

. I'll be looking for a complete wood kit for that if anyone knows where I might get one at a good price.

Here's a couple of questions if anyone can answer them I'd like to know.

I've seen quite a few pictures of Moggys (should that be Moggies?) without wing mirrors can someone explain why and the legality? Also where can I find out what shape wing mirrors are right for each years model or was it a matter of choice for the buyer?

When I first got my car I asked the same question about wing mirrors. I was told that the legal requirement is one rear facing mirror, so the interior mirror is all that is required.

If you add wing mirrors it is upto you what shape you put on as they are not year specific but an optional extra from the dealer.

Hi Bill, Welcome to the Club and this site - check out the New Members thread at the top of the page. As Matt says wing mirrors seem to be a personal choice. It would seem that the round mirrors suit the earlier cars and that the later ones used the more oblong shaped Desmo swingback sort. Likewise many people find that fixing the mirrors to the wings doesn't give a good view of what's overtaking these days so resort to another one on the quarterlight.

Welcome Bill, I didn't want holes in my new wings so opted for the quarter light type - I decided this was best for me because all our other cars have them about there so it would mean less frantic moments when you need to look in a mirror!

If you decide to fit wing mirrors fit convex glass ones, they give a much better field of view, and try to fit the longest arms possible.
Travellers should have an external mirror on both sides as they are classed as utility vehicles, they can be loaded to the roof obstructing the view through the interior mirror.

Welcome to the forum! Wing mirrors work very well indeed - far better than the wee quarter-light clip-on things. Set them well and you get a great field of vision - but as mp says - go for convex glass. But there is no need to fit them if you don't want to.

Wing mirrors were an optional extra so most didnt bother paying extra for them!!!

Welcome Bill - Im just down the road from you in Sway, I have a pair of mirrors waiting to be fixed to the doors, near to the quarter light. Ive had wing mirrrors on previous Mog's which were great but kept getting knocked in car parks and were the devil to position back just in the right place on your own!.

I've had wing mirrors before and found them troublesome to adjust when on your own, and Mike said.

When I fitted new wings I opted for quaterlight mounted ones to reduce the chance of any rust around the holes I'd just drilled in my nice wings. I've found that the field of vision in either is pretty much the same so it's down to your personal taste.

Just to note, on the way to an MOT once the drivers side one came off in my hand so I put it in the glove box. The car still passed it's MOT though....

Thanks to all your replies they were helpful and interesting. Also the info about the traveller being a utility vehicle was helpful too it's something I will remember to keep in mind. I bought a nice pair of round wing mirrors a few weeks back for the saloon but now I'll keep them for the traveller and use a quarter light on the saloon. I prefer the look of the moggy without wing mirrors and would have put them on in ignorance. Cheers hope to met some of you over 2010 TTFN.
