Advice Requested on Convertible Hood and Frame

Post by keithSB »

Hi

Having worked on my 2 door saloon last year (picture below)

I am nearing the end of a restoration of a much neglected SII saloon previously converted to a soft top. (I guess I have now got the moggie bug)

The existing frame is well past its best and the heavy canvas top in need of some TLC.

So I have pretty much decided to fit a new frame and hood.

I can see both mohair and vinyl hoods for sale.

Can anyone give me any advice on the things to watch out for, and which is the best value for the money.

Secondly several traders offer new frames, are they all the same? and has anyone had any problems buying a frame from one supplier and a hood from another?

Kind Regards

Can't help with the hood query but I love the two door. Where did you get the white steering wheel from? Is it a standard one that's been 'painted' or from another vehicle?

Hi Louise

Thanks for your reply, The steering wheel is a standard one that I got resprayed with hardened white. I got the gear stick and hand brake done at the same time, and it does finish it off nicely.

Kind Regards

Mohair, or duck are the better quality fabrics to use although more expensive but should last longer with proper care. It shouldn't be a problem buying hood and frame seperate, but it has to be fitted properly as even a quality hood fitted incorrectly will look awful. Try these people for advice

If fitting a vinyl hood drape the hood over the frame on a hot day with a heater in the car. This warms up the material making it easier to get the hood very tight.

New hood

Post by keithSB »

Many thanks for the suggestion of talking to Polyfacto I have found them to be very helpful, and have ordered my new hood.

I am expecting it early next week and will let you know how we get on fitting it to the new frame I got from one of the main dealers

Hi there Keith, just come across this post. Very very nice car. And familiar too, were you at the Crich Morris Minor Day this year? Think I saw you in the petrol station up the road and then parked near the tram depot at the village. Can I ask how much your respray was and what sort of paint you chose. I am not painting mine but I was just wondering.
Cheers
Steve
