Removing rear wing on a traveller

Post by Mike Shipman »

Hi,
The joint in the wood over the rear wheelarch on my traveller has separated and I was hoping to open up the joint, clean it out and reglue.

The problem is that I cannot do this without removing the wing to get access to clean out, glue up, and then cramp it up (unless someone can advise differently?).
The photo below was taken a couple of years ago, the joint has opened up further since then.

My questions are:
How "easy" is it to remove the wing without damaging it or the wood?,
and, what is the liklihood of being able to replace it after the woods been reglued and it still looking OK?.

Thanks, Mike.

It all depends whether the fixings (in my case bolts into captive 'nuts' screwed into the woodwork) were protected soon after fitting. If not and they've rusted, or some 'bodge' method has been used - you may have problems!

Even if you rmove the wing, you will not be able to clamp the joint. The wheel arch sections are screwed in from the inside, through the alloy panel.

It might be better to leave the wing on and remove the panel behind the joint.
The screws that hold it live inside the car and should be in good condition.
There will be some type of mastic between the panel and the wood.

MarkyB - thanks for that suggestion - a nice bit of lateral thinking! Ive got to replace the waist rail on the same side so may do both at the same time. A job for the springtime though I think!
Thanks, Mike.
