Piston movement

Post by SvMinor »

I have the engine apart and Pistons 1 and 3 silde easily inside the block, where as nos 2 and 4 have more resistance, and when moved by hand a hiss can be heard that sounds like air being forced out of the of the bores.should there be resistance in all the bores or does it alternate,(resistance in 1+3 then in 2+4)or does the lack of resistance mean the rings are worn?
There didnt seem to be blue smoke from the exhaust before strip down

it should all turn freely if the head is off and its out of gear.

Put some oil in the bores and turn them round what happens to the oil

I think the head is still attached! So - the pistons with the hiss/resistance - are the ones with the valves lying closed. You can confirm by checking the valve positions - take the rocker cover off.

If the head is still on and you put the plugs in and turn the engine over on the handle you should have 4 even strokes (2 revolutions with the handle)

Doubt it - there's no timing chain on (and maybe still no crank fitted!) - so the valves won't move!!
