Bill, I agree with you, I'm not arguing otherwise, but trying offer realistic ways to resolve the problem.
Have a though for folk such as us, we spend the 3 hours fitting springs @ £45 per hour plus Vat. We conclude as you do that the springs are not what they should be, remove them send them back, refit another set, by which time we now have 9 hours labour and carriage costs, but worse still we cannot claim consequential loss which is now running at £310.50 plus carriage plus loss of earnings on the job we could not do due to doing this one twice and you will soon realise that it is not in my interests to do nothing about this situation.
There are products where there are no substitutes and the parts are sub standard, maybe we should be refusing to service our customers due to so many 'bad ' parts. which simply escalate the costs to all of us to put right ?.

In an ideal world yes, especially with known problem parts, then manufacturers would not sell their wares or decide not to bother to make them. Then someone would fill the gap in the market (given time!) if they produced a decent product, but from a your companies point of view, and others it would amount to suicide I expect, but maybe not if you're losing money over it, but as mentioned many times spares would cost more. Although in some instances to my mind it is as easy to make something dimensionally right as it is to make dimensionaly different! My current project is hopefully coming to an end, then I'm out. I browned off with the situation. After this it's just tinkering about with things for me.
