indicator stalk problem?

I had an original indicator stalk fitted into my car, and was told by the garage that it self cancelled. Well it does'nt and i'm wondering if they ever did and if so can anybody give me an idea of how to get it working, I don't really want to take it back to the garage to fix as it's probably something quite trivial I can do myself.

There is a pin on the steering column which should cancel the indicators as the wheel is straightened. You may have to remove the steering wheel and shroud to see it. Try removing the 2 shroud screws first and then moving the shroud a little.

I'll have a go and see what happens, I just was'nt sure if a stalk for a 1970 car would be self cancelling, I'm putting the car back to how it used to be when first produced, I'm a bit of a traditionalist at heart.

I believe they were self-cancelling as of 1959 (basically all of the ones with the green flashing light) but not many of them seem to work very well, mine will cancel if you turn tight enough however on a normal 90 degree turn it usually doesn't.

I've set mine up by jacking up the front end of the car, removing the steering wheel and shroud, slacken the clamp screws to the stalk. Loosely replace the steering wheel and rotate from side to side whilst moving the stalk up or down until the pin on the column lines up. You can operate the stalk left and right, rotate the wheel to make sure it cancells.

Call me old fashioned but I prefer non self cancelling indicators.

I agree with you Mike, but I usually drive a modern car during the week, so I get in a bit of a pickle when i'm out in my Moggie, take a corner and then wonder why people are tooting me and flashing me, at first I used to think they thought "great car" but then realised i'd gone 1/2 mile with the indicator still flashing

I fitted a 99p beeper off ebay to remind me to cancel the indicators after nearly writing it off in the first week because a car pulled out on me cos I was indicating left still

I hate cars telling me what to do. Bleepers if you leave this on, buzzers if you leave that on. I know that I have stopped the engine and the lights are still on! I want to check the bulbs!

Modern cars may be clever but they can't read you mind.
I'd rather put up with a bleep that I understand the reason for, than find my car wont start because I left the lights on.

Some of these "refinements" don't appeal though.
I'll decide when to switch on the light and wipers thank you.
