Traveller Spare Wheel compartment

Post by stuart_k »

Should this have a cover or was it originally left open? Most of the pics I see show this compartment open with the spare wheel and other contents on display. Ours has a makeshift cover which has seen better days. What was there originally? Any pics?

Yes - there should be a slide-in hardboard cover blanking off the rear.

Oh well that's what we've got. I'll just spruce it up a bit then.

The originals were fibreboard, not hardboard. A few rogue suppliers have sold both hardboard and plywood imitations over the year, and I'm sure that there are a few home-made versions as well. Newton Commercial sell a reasonable replica, but it is far thinner than the original and does not have the original metal base.

Ahh - I stand corrected! I keep mine in the garage loft space - out of harm's way!

I made mine out of a sheet of ally treadplate. Still needs one or two mods.

I went along to my local metal supplier on the off chance that they would have something suitable and spotted the off cut of plate which they cut down to size. It is about 1 1/2 inches above the boot floor but that gave me room to fit a length of door draught excluder to cover the sharp edge. The bottom fits behind the trianglar pieces in the bottom corners and there is enough flexiblity to close the door bolt.
Actually I cribbed the idea off another Traveller at a rally, but then all good ideas should be shared around.
Anyone got a good design for luggage space cover?
Image
I've noticed that cover seems to be a common place for owners to carve the car's nickname...
