gearbox replace ?

Post by sidsmith »

:-? :-? I have '56 splitscreen which the mot tester tells me has a 1000cc gearbox fitted the ribbed type. I have seen another gearbox advertised that has been rebuilt and it's advertised for a 1098 , so could I possibly use it on my car as my gearbox seems to be worn and it rattles a bit although it still drives.
cheers. :-? :-?

If you have the 1098 ribbed, replacing it with another will be a staight swap. Usually the 948 engine had the 1098 clutch fitted when the conversion was done.

Sounds like a straight swop - is there any oil in your own gearbox ?? How extensive was the 'rebuild' on the box you are considering ? If it didn't have a NEW second gear fitted - then beware!

gearbox replace

Post by sidsmith »

:( not knowing a lot about the technicalities all I know is when I got under the car to have a look, what I saw was the ribbed gearbox, and not the smooth cased one.therefore I am assuming that whoever had the car before me must have up rated the car. It was the mot tester who used to own moggies that told me it had been changed and uprated. the worst problem I think with my gearbox is that when I am driving along in 4th gear and cruising the gearstick rattles and sounds like someone rattling a tin with a ballbearing inside. I know that moggies are usually a bit noisy but surely this isn't right.

Sounds a silly question but have you checked that there is oil in the gearbox?

Hi Mate, Undo the the metal square trim that holds the gearstick gator in place (usually about 8 screws) and you will see three bolts, undo these and carefully withdraw the gearstick. There should be an anti rattle mechanism just in the top of the gearbox. It is springloaded and pushes against the gearstick to stop it rattling. My one dropped into the gearbox and gave the symtoms you are describing, so it might be worth a look before you change the gearbox. Still check the oil level - just in case.

When you changed the oil - what did you use ? Also worth checking the level - you never know!
